Scaling and polishing is a professional cleaning of your teeth. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which cannot be removed by brushing alone. Tartar irritates the gums and can cause bleeding, bad breath and, if ignored, gum disease.
During scaling, tartar and stains are removed from above and just below the gum line. Polishing then smooths the tooth surface, making it harder for plaque to stick again. Most people benefit from a professional cleaning once or twice a year, or as advised by their dentist.
When You May Need Scaling & Polishing
- Bleeding gums while brushing
- Bad breath that does not go away
- Visible yellow or brown deposits on the teeth
- Surface stains from tea, coffee or tobacco
- Routine preventive care at regular intervals
How the Treatment Works
- Examination. Your teeth and gums are checked to decide how much cleaning is needed.
- Scaling. Tartar and deposits are removed using an ultrasonic scaler and, where needed, hand instruments.
- Polishing. The teeth are polished with a gritty paste to remove stains and smooth the surface.
- Advice. You are shown the correct brushing and flossing technique for your mouth.
Benefits
- Healthier, less inflamed gums
